Lessons I am Learning-Kandis Twa
I used to look back on some of the decisions I have made in my life and wonder what was I thinking! I was reflecting on one such decision after I ran into a girlfriend that I used to work with. My first career was in health care and my tenure there was admittedly very short. I used to be ashamed that I had spent so much time in school only to actually work in the field for a fraction of that time. Well, looking back on it now I can get of those experiences because I can see that what happened was exactly perfect to bring to where I am now in my life. I’ve dug the gold out of career number one. Here’s how I did it.
I came across a piece by Bernie Siegel called “Why We Become Doctors”. After reading this I was inspired to reflect on my own motivations about what drove me into health care. Basically, I believed that the world was full of suffering and it was up to me to fix it (not what I put on my school application forms but that was the gist of it). So, here I was feeling like I was doing a good thing by helping all of these people when really, they were helping me. Helping me to learn why it is important not to be rescuing people all the time, and highlighting the idea that if I don’t put myself first no one else will.
