Granted, forgiveness is a big topic and to some people it seems just exhausting to think about, but the underlying principle of it is quite simple. Forgiveness means that you no longer wish to carry it forward. ‘It’ of course can be situations, experiences, wrong doings or whatever it is that you feel is still out there-unfinished and unforgiven. In other words you’ve made a decision to leave it behind, to be done with it. Where we get confused is a lot of us believe that forgiveness means to pardon, that what happened doesn’t matter. That is not true, what happens in our life means a great deal, but the choice we make is about how long we want to carry the weight of that negative experience. I’ve also heard forgiveness as being defined as ‘giving up the hope that the past could have been different’.
When I came to an understanding of forgiveness from this perspective, it shifted a lot of things for me. I made up a list of all the people, including (and especially) myself that I wanted to forgive-it was a long list. It took some reflection but once I started the list came together pretty quickly; grade one teacher, ex-boyfriends, the guys who give parking tickets…There is a great prayer of forgiveness from our friends at Ish-a-tah that I used and then burned the list. To say it changed everything will sound a bit extreme. but it shifted everything and it was simple-I just made a choice.
Chapter 25 of Change is Natural is dedicated to the topic of forgiveness. Titled, Clearing your Field for More of What you Want to Come into your Life, it explains how forgiveness brings about a clearing within your energetic field. It’s a short chapter, only a couple of pages long but I hope that you find it to be informative and inspiring.

How I made amends-Kandis Twa
Rich Vreeland and I have been having a good discussion about God. Rich posted a very good blog post “Don’t Look Away” on compassion last week. His post was motivated by photos he saw of people suffering from the famine that is ongoing in Eastern Africa. I remember what I used to think when I saw these kinds of photos-evidence of suffering and I couldn’t help but wonder if God loves us why do people suffer?
I put this question to Rich and bless his heart he stepped up to the plate and shared how he has reconciled this for himself. So, I believe that I better follow suit.
I don’t recall what inspired me to sit down and examine by belief systems about God. I was not brought up in a religious household so my relationship with God was not something I had ever given much thought to. But one day I did think about it, perhaps after seeing the same kind of photos that Rich wrote about, I asked myself what I did I believe about the suffering people experience all over the world and my internal dialogue went a little something like this:

Lessons I am Learning-Kandis Twa
“When you hold resentment toward another, you are bound to that person or condition by an emotional link that is stronger than steel. Forgiveness is the only way to dissolve that link and get free.”
-Catherine Ponder
I wanted to share something that I have tried that has really made a difference for me. It was an exercise that Audrey Hanson has published on her Ish-a-tah website. Audrey has been a wonderful inspiration and teacher for myself and all of us here at Pure Leadership. She is a medium and has been channeling Archangel Haniel for groups for several years now. One of the teaching that she has shared on her website is called “Getting on Gods Payroll”. Interestingly, the exercise is really about forgiveness. Now, I have done quite a bit of forgiveness in the last couple of years, thought I understood it well. I loved what Oprah Winfrey said about it, which is; “forgiveness is when you stop wishing that the past could have been any different”. I resonated with all of this but, to be honest, it still felt like I was missing some aspect of it. Did forgiveness mean absolving past wrongs, past hurt feelings?
